Messias Tawny Port 0.375L
Messias Tawny Port presents itself with a brick-red color and an elegant aroma of blackberries, plums, spices, vanilla, and a subtle hint of wood. On the palate, a variety of elegant, mineral nuances unfold with a fresh sweetness. The slight oxidative note of this barrel-aged port enhances the enjoyment and softens the intensity of the sweetness. A wonderfully long finish concludes this flavorful explosion of aromas. Port wine is produced from the typical grape varieties of the Douro Valley, which are still often planted in field blends. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinto Cão, and Tinta Barroca, in particular, thrive here on granite and schist soils in terraced vineyards along the Douro River. The maceration in the lagares (barrel-aged wine cellars) is stopped at approximately 7% ABV by the addition of 77% pure wine distillate. The point at which the fermentation stops determines the remaining residual sugar, and thus the sweetness of the port wine. The port then matures in casks for at least two years; depending on the quality level, even up to six years. As a final product, port wine has an alcohol content of 19-22% ABV, making it suitable for long-term storage.

The Portuguese winery Messias Porto was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista in Quinta do Cachão. Baptista remained managing director until 1973; the winery has been family-owned ever since. The vineyards are located in close proximity to the Douro River and comprise a total vineyard area of over 200 hectares. Various red and white grape varieties are cultivated on the predominantly schist soils to produce high-quality wines. Red grape varieties include Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Baga, and Touriga Nacional, while white varieties include Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura. In addition to classic wines, Messias Porto also offers port and sparkling wines. Prémios Grandes Escolhas, 02/2018 Best Port Wine Producer
