Flagman's Madeira
Madeira is a golden-brown fortified wine from the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira, which has been known and famous for its wines for centuries. Many ships called at the port of Funchal on their way from Europe to India and also took barrels of wine with them, which interestingly tasted better after it had undergone the sea voyage through the tropics. To bring about a comparable maturation process, the trading houses developed so-called "estufas", rooms or tanks in which the wine is heated and thus a similar maturation process is set in motion.
The vineyards are laid out in terraces on steep slopes on volcanic soils. After harvesting and pressing the grapes, approx. 4-5% wine alcohol is added to the must – like other famous fortified wines – to stop fermentation and obtain a certain degree of sweetness. The wine gets its typical scent of caramel through storage for several months at approx. 50 degrees Celsius.
Madeiras are available from very dry to very sweet, their shelf life is almost unlimited if stored correctly (not too warm, no direct sunlight, best protected from light – this applies to every wine and most alcoholic specialties) and they are indispensable in fine cuisine. They are also an insider tip as an aperitif that is still not very widespread in Germany.

How long does an opened bottle keep?
Madeira is exceptionally stable due to its high alcohol content (19% vol.) and the oxidation process during production. An opened bottle keeps for several weeks without any problems if stored sealed and cool.

Cool, protected from light, and without strong temperature fluctuations — that is enough. Madeira is considered one of the longest-lived wines of all; with proper storage, its shelf life is almost unlimited.
