Pontac – an almost forgotten variety from South Africa
In the Vinoscout range, you will currently find a wine from the Pontac grape variety – a rarity from Stellenbosch that hardly any other shop carries. The entry starts from 20.90 euros.
Origin & character
Pontac is considered one of the oldest grape varieties in South Africa and was widespread in the Cape region in the 17th and 18th centuries before it almost completely disappeared. Today, it is only cultivated by a few wineries in Stellenbosch. The variety provides deeply colored, dark, oxidatively aged wines in the port wine style: strong, sweet, and with a characteristic spiciness that reminds one of dried plums, dark chocolate, and a hint of leather. The sweetness is integrated, the finish long and warm – typical for a wine that demands time and rest.
Pairs with
- Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content
- Mature hard cheese, such as aged Gouda or Manchego
- Dried fruits and nuts as a dessert accompaniment
- Braised meat or hearty game dishes
