Primitivo
Primitivo grabs you with the first sip: dark blackberries, ripe plum, cinnamon, and a hint of chocolate – velvety, full-bodied, irresistibly warm. Whether dry or off-dry, young and direct or aged and complex, no other red wine from Southern Italy has this rich, sun-drenched depth. Genetically identical to the American Zinfandel – but Apulia is the original.
Its home is Puglia, especially Primitivo di Manduria and the Salento, where heat and barren soils drive the berries to extraordinary ripeness. At Vinoscout, you will discover over 60 carefully scouted wines, from accessible everyday companions to aged characters for special moments – Apulia with passion, the right thing for every occasion.

Primitivo – the powerful red wine from Apulia
Anyone who has ever tasted a true Primitivo immediately understands why this grape variety captivates so many wine lovers: dark, full-bodied, warm – and yet surprisingly elegant. At Vinoscout, you'll find over 66 wines of this fascinating variety, from accessible entry-level wines starting at €5.95 to mature rarities for discerning collectors.
Origin: From Croatia via Apulia to California
The story of Primitivo begins on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, where the grape is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski – simply translated as "the reddish one." At some point, presumably via trade routes, it reached southern Italy and found its true home in Apulia . Today, the region around Manduria in the province of Taranto is the heart of Primitivo cultivation. Here, the vine benefits from intense sunshine, poor soils, and the sea breezes of the Ionian Sea – ideal conditions for concentrated, characterful wines.
What many don't know: Primitivo is genetically identical to the American Zinfandel . In California, where the grape is considered a noble variety, it produces robust red wines, but also fruity rosés and even white wines. Two continents, one grape – and yet two completely distinct wine worlds.
Flavor profile: Dark, warm, and complex
A good Primitivo is not a quiet wine. It makes a confident statement – and rightly so. Typical characteristics include:
- Aromas of dark berries such as blackberry, plum and black cherry.
- Spicy notes of cinnamon, cloves, and sometimes a hint of tobacco or cocoa
- A full-bodied, velvety wine with soft tannins.
- High alcohol content – often between 14 and 17 percent – which, however, does not feel sharp, but warm and smooth.
This intensity is due, among other things, to the uneven ripening of the Primitivo grape: fully ripe and still green berries can hang on a single vine at the same time. Experienced winemakers therefore carefully sort and select precisely – the result is wines of remarkable depth and fruitiness.
Primitivo di Manduria DOC – the top class
The most famous quality label is Primitivo di Manduria DOC . This protected designation of origin stands for wines from the core area around Manduria, which adhere to strict production regulations. One step higher are the Riserva wines, which are aged longer and possess exceptional depth and aging potential.
Among the best-selling wines in our selection is the Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOC from Feudi di San Marzano (€18.49) – a wine whose name, "60 Years," refers to the age of the vines. Also very popular are the Anniversario 62 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva , also from Feudi di San Marzano (€18.90), and the Diciotto Colline Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC from Torrevento (€18.95). For an easy introduction, try the as, if! Primitivo di Manduria DOC from Torrevento for €8.95 or the I Tratturi Primitivo Puglia from Feudi di San Marzano, starting at €5.95.
A special recommendation for explorers: the as, if! Appassimento Primitivo from Torrevento (€10.49). In the appassimento method, the grapes are dried before fermentation, which concentrates the aromas and sugar content – the result is a particularly dense, almost syrupy wine with tremendous richness.
Food recommendations: Primitivo at the table
The power of Primitivo demands dishes that can stand up to it. It pairs particularly well with:
- Grilled and braised meats – leg of lamb, beef brisket, venison ragout
- Hearty Italian cuisine – Pasta all'Amatriciana, Orecchiette with sausage, Aubergine Parmigiana
- Mature hard cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano
- Dark chocolate – a classic dessert pairing that beautifully reflects the fruit flavors
