Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOC - 3.0L double magnum

The Sessantanni – the name simply means "sixty years" – is Feudi di San Marzano's answer to the question of what happens when Primitivo vines are allowed to age in the Apulian heat. Deep ruby red, almost black, with violet reflections in the glass.

The Feudi di San Marzano winery is one of the most important producers in the Primitivo di Manduria DOC , the heartland of Primitivo in the province of Taranto. The ancient vines – at least six decades old, some even older – yield small quantities of highly concentrated grapes. Low yields and deep roots in the red iron oxide soil of Apulia.

In the glass, the 2016 vintage displays aromas of black cherry, ripe blackberries, and plums , underpinned by licorice, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla from the oak aging. On the palate, it is full-bodied and juicy, with velvety tannins and a long, spicy, and warm finish. A wine with real drive – not heavy despite its substantial body.

The 3.0-liter double magnum matures more slowly than the standard bottle: The drinking window extends until at least 2028–2030 .

  • Dishes: Braised leg of lamb, wild boar salami, aged pecorino cheese
  • Temperature: 17–18 °C
  • Occasion: A large dinner with company – a double magnum calls for a large table

Feudi di San Marzano

What nineteen winegrowing families from San Marzano di San Giuseppe sealed with a handshake in 1962 is today one of the most renowned names in Apulia: Feudi di San Marzano. Around 1,500 winegrowers cultivate more than 1,200 hectares of vines together in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP, many of them still using the traditional Alberello system – the bush-trained vines that have defined the character of Salento for generations. The red limestone soil, the sun, and the sea breezes between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas shape wines that are powerful yet precise. Every grape is harvested by hand, and chemical fertilizers are strictly avoided.
