Malbec
Malbec seduces with juicy aromas of plum and ripe blackberry, a hint of dark chocolate and sweet spices – velvety and full-bodied on the palate with supple tannins that make it irresistibly approachable. Sometimes powerful and concentrated, sometimes elegant and refined, it pairs perfectly with a good piece of meat or simply enjoyed on its own.

Malbec – the velvety soul of Argentina
No other red wine embodies the magic of the Andes as convincingly as a good Malbec. What once played a supporting role in France has unfolded its true character in Argentina: powerful, velvety, deeply fruity – and surprisingly accessible. At Vinoscout you will find 45 carefully selected Malbec wines from Argentina and beyond, from everyday discoveries to real cellar gems – from 5.95 euros.
From Cahors to Mendoza – a grape variety finds its home
The history of Malbec begins in the southwest of France, more precisely in Cahors on the Lot river. There, the grape variety – regionally also called “Côt” or “Auxerrois” – was known for centuries for its almost black color and rustic tannin structure. In the middle of the 19th century, European immigrants brought the vine to Argentina, and what happened then borders on a transformation: the highland climate of the Andes, the intense sunlight, and the cool nights transformed the once rough Frenchman into a supple, fruit-driven red wine with an unmistakable character.
Today, Mendoza is the undisputed heart of Argentine Malbec. The vineyards are located at altitudes between 800 and over 1,500 meters – the higher the location, the more elegant and fresh the wine. Subregions like Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley are considered reference addresses for Malbec at a world-class level.
Flavor profile: What makes Malbec so special?
A classic Argentine Malbec delights with a deep ruby red, which often leans towards violet. In the nose, ripe dark fruits dominate – blackberry, plum, black cherry – supplemented by notes of violets, cocoa, and sometimes a hint of tobacco or leather. On the palate, it appears full-bodied and velvety, with soft, round tannins and a pleasant freshness that never makes it seem heavy despite its fullness. Oak barrel aging gives many wines additional depth: vanilla, roasted aromas, and a long, warm finish round off the picture.
Malbec and food – a pair that works
Malbec is an extremely food-friendly red wine. Its fruit fullness and soft tannins make it the ideal companion for:
- Grilled meat – the Argentine asado is no coincidence, Malbec and beef are a dream combination
- Lamb dishes – braised lamb shank or lamb chops harmonize wonderfully with the fruit depth
- Hearty pasta – Bolognese, ragù, or dishes with tomato-meat sauces
- Mature cheeses – Manchego, cheddar, or strong mountain cheese
- Dark chocolate – surprisingly harmonious as a dessert companion
Our Malbec recommendations for every occasion
For an uncomplicated wine evening, we recommend the Portillo Malbec from Salentein (from 8.45 euros) or the Finca Las Moras DADÁ No.1 (from 7.85 euros) – both from Mendoza, both with the typical Malbec melt that simply puts you in a good mood. Those who want to invest a little more are right on the money with the Viña Cobos Felino Malbec (13.85 euros) or the Salentein Barrel Selection Malbec (14.80 euros) – classic Mendoza Malbecs with barrel aging and impressive depth.
For fans of organic wines, the Domaine Bousquet Malbec Grande Reserve (organic) (18.99 euros) is an excellent choice – biodynamically farmed, with great aromatic precision. And anyone looking for a characterful Malbec with recognition value should try the Puro Malbec from Dieter Meier (17.95 euros) – a wine with personality, behind which stands an unusual Swiss entrepreneur and artist.
