From Huguenot pioneers to one of the oldest wineries in South Africa

The history of Boschendal begins in 1685 in the Drakenstein Valley between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch — where the Huguenot Jean le Long was allocated land by the Dutch colonial administrator after his flight from religiously persecuted France and planted the first vines. The name simply means "forest and valley" in Dutch and aptly describes the location at the foot of the Simonsberg. From 1715, the Huguenot family de Villiers took over the estate and managed it for more than 160 years; they built the Cape Dutch manor house, which is now protected as a national cultural heritage. Towards the end of the 19th century, Boschendal briefly came into the possession of mining entrepreneur Cecil John Rhodes, before Anglo American Corporation took over the property in the late 1960s and fundamentally renewed the vineyards and cellars. Since 1976, viticulture has been consistently practiced on the estate again.

The vineyard areas extend over six kilometers along the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein to the Simonsberg and are located at altitudes between 120 and 350 meters. This altitude range allows different grape varieties to be planted where the respective conditions — soil, exposure, daytime temperatures — fit best. Clay and Tukulu soils alternate and sustainably shape the mineral structure of the wines.

Terroir thinking, separate cellar, sustainability as an attitude

Boschendal sees itself as a terroir-driven estate: the location in the vineyard decides which grape variety is planted where, and each plot is vinified separately before the best components are assembled into the wine. In the cellar, separate teams work for red and white wine — a conscious structural means to deepen the specific expertise for each style. Precise, small-batch work, gentle hand-picking and targeted use of barrels are part of the declared craft.

Sustainability at Boschendal is not a marketing term, but proven by external certifications: the estate bears the IPW seal (Integrated Production of Wine), which prescribes international environmental standards for cultivation, cellar and bottling, as well as SIZA certification for ethically sustainable trade. As the first winery in the world, Boschendal also received the Green Key certificate for its accommodation — an internationally recognized award from the Foundation for Environmental Education for exemplary sustainable management. The goal: to preserve South Africa's extraordinary biodiversity and permanently strengthen the people who work on the estate.

A range between Cape Classic and regional depth

The Boschendal range reflects the breadth of the Western Cape. The 1685 Collection — named after the founding year — includes the house's best-selling styles: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for fresh, fruit-driven white wines, Chenin Blanc as a South African specialty with a textured feel, plus Pinotage and Shiraz as red wines with warm spice and ripe fruit. Those looking for more regional precision will find it in the Elgin Pinot Noir: grapes from the cool Elgin Valley, which is known for fine tannins and tight acidity due to sea air and slow ripening. The Brut MCC — a sparkling wine made according to the traditional method — rounds off the offer. Overall, Boschendal clearly shows what South Africa's wine landscape can do: fruit-forward, accessible wines without heaviness, with a clear reference to the location and craft that has been cultivated on this estate for over 340 years.
