Elgin Chardonnay

Elgin Chardonnay
Cooler climate, taut acidity, clear fruit: The Elgin Chardonnay from Boschendal shows what the high valley east of Cape Town gets out of this grape variety.
Boschendal is one of South Africa's oldest wineries – its history dates back to the 17th century. The grapes for this Chardonnay come from the Elgin Valley, around 700 meters above sea level. The combination of cool nights and long ripening phases ensures a natural acidity that carries the wine without dominating it.
In the glass, grapefruit and Golden Delicious apple appear, plus lemon blossom and a fine hint of vanilla from the 11-month aging in French barriques. The use of wood remains restrained – the fruit is in the foreground, the finish is long and fresh.
Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Goes well with fried cod with caper butter, chicken in white wine sauce, or mild goat cheese. Also a good choice as an accompaniment to risotto with lemon and herbs.

In 1685, Jean Le Long founded the Boschendal winery in South Africa. The name translates to "forest and valley," aptly describing the region 60 kilometers east of Cape Town where the winery is located. The winemakers cultivate a total of 350 hectares of vineyards, spread across altitudes ranging from 120 to 350 meters, allowing different wines to be grown under the optimal conditions for each. Boschendal's vineyards are characterized by clay soils and the so-called Tukuli soils, on which white and red grape varieties are grown for both classic wines and sparkling wines. In the winery's modern cellars, 2.88 million bottles of wine are bottled annually.
