Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay

Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay
A Chardonnay that shows what the Western Cape is capable of: fresh, clearly structured, with a subtle wood note instead of being overloaded.
Boschendal is one of South Africa's oldest wineries – founded in 1685 in the Franschhoek Valley, the historic heart of the Cape. The valley, with its Huguenot-influenced farms, lies between the Franschhoek and Groot Drakenstein Mountains, where cool mountain winds slow the vines' growth and sharpen the aromas. The "1685" cuvée line references the founding year and represents approachable, expertly crafted wines from estate-grown grapes.
In the glass, the Chardonnay displays aromas of lime and ripe pineapple, complemented by a hint of vanilla and white peach from the brief aging in oak barrels. The acidity remains lively without being sharp, the body is medium-bodied, and the finish is clean and fresh.
Recommendation: Serve well chilled at 10–12 °C. Pairs well with grilled sea bass, chicken breast with lemon butter, or a creamy pasta dish with seafood. Also makes a convincing and uncomplicated aperitif.

In 1685, Jean Le Long founded the Boschendal winery in South Africa. The name translates to "forest and valley," aptly describing the region 60 kilometers east of Cape Town where the winery is located. The winemakers cultivate a total of 350 hectares of vineyards, spread across altitudes ranging from 120 to 350 meters, allowing different wines to be grown under the optimal conditions for each. Boschendal's vineyards are characterized by clay soils and the so-called Tukuli soils, on which white and red grape varieties are grown for both classic wines and sparkling wines. In the winery's modern cellars, 2.88 million bottles of wine are bottled annually.
