Origin & Character
Tannat originally comes from the southwest of France, where it is vinified in Madiran into dense, tannin-rich wines. In Uruguay, especially in the coastal region of Garzón with its Atlantic influence and well-drained granite soils, the variety develops a somewhat softer, more accessible side – without losing its substance. Typical are aromas of dark berries, blackberry, and plum, complemented by notes of leather, tobacco, and dark chocolate. The tannins are present and provide structure, the finish is long and dry. Well-matured examples benefit from a few years of cellar rest.
