Origin & Character
Magliocco grows almost exclusively in Calabria, the southernmost part of mainland Italy, where sun, barren soils, and sea wind shape the vines. The variety appears in two main variants – Magliocco Canino and Magliocco Dolce – and produces deeply colored ruby-red wines with a powerful structure. Typical are aromas of dark cherries, blackberry, and dried herbs, often accompanied by a hint of tobacco and clove. The tannins are firm but not coarse; with some aging, the wines develop a pleasant velvetiness. Anyone who wants to encounter southern Italian red wines beyond Primitivo and Nero d'Avola will find a rewarding alternative here.
