Xinomavro
Discover Xinomavro, a grape variety that truly shines. Often described as the Greek equivalent of Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir, it produces wines that impress with their depth and substance. Our selection comes from cool, high-altitude vineyards, where the grapes develop their unique aromas thanks to significant temperature variations between day and night. These wines are ideal if you're looking for something sophisticated yet approachable. A genuine taste of Greek wine culture for relaxed evenings at home.Filters

Xinomavro — the great red wine of Northern Greece
Xinomavro is considered one of the most important red wine varieties in Greece — tannin-rich, acidity-driven, and with remarkable aging potential. At Vinoscout, you will currently find a wine from this variety, the Alpha Estate Xinomavro Hedgehog from Macedonia, from 17.99 euros.
Origin & character
The variety comes from Macedonia in the north of Greece, where the continental climate with hot summers and cool nights ensures structure and freshness. The name means roughly "sour black" — an indication of the pronounced acidity and the dark berry fruit that characterize Xinomavro. In the glass, aromas of dried tomato, olive, black cherry, and spices such as oregano or black pepper appear. The tannins are firm, but well-integrated with some air or aging. Stylistically, Xinomavro is often compared to Nebbiolo: both varieties lose their color early in the glass, but gain complexity over the years.
Pairs with
- Leg of lamb with Mediterranean herbs
- Braised beef or ossobuco
- Mature hard cheese such as Graviera or Pecorino
- Eggplant dishes and hearty tomato sauces
