Samtrot – the gentle side of Württemberg
Samtrot is one of the quiet specialties of German viticulture – hardly known outside of Württemberg, but with an unmistakable character. At Vinoscout, you will currently find a Samtrot, starting at 6.99 euros.
Origin & Character
Samtrot is a mutation of Schwarzriesling and grows almost exclusively in Württemberg, where the variety has been carefully cultivated for decades. The name says it all: the wines feel soft, almost velvety in mouthfeel, with little tannin and a light, ruby-red color. Typical are aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and a delicate floral tone – sometimes supplemented by a light spice. Samtrot is vinified both dry and semi-dry; in the semi-dry variant, a subtle residual sweetness remains, which brings the fruit even more to the fore. This makes it an uncomplicated, accessible red wine that does not need a long maturation period.
Pairs well with
- Snack platters with cold cuts and pretzel pastries
- Light pasta with tomato sugo or vegetable sauce
- Grilled poultry and light meat
- Mild washed-rind cheese or young Gouda
