Mavrodaphne – dark grape from the Peloponnese
Mavrodaphne is one of the most characterful red wine varieties in Greece – deep in color, aromatically dense, and more versatile than its reputation as a sweet wine might suggest. At Vinoscout, you will currently find one wine of this variety, starting at 9.99 euros.
Origin & character
The variety comes from the Peloponnese and is primarily native to the area around Patras, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Its name literally means "black laurel" – a reference to the deep dark berry color and the spicy aromatics. Classically vinified, Mavrodaphne unfolds aromas of prunes, raisins, dark chocolate, and a hint of dried herbs. Many wines of this variety are oxidatively aged, which gives them a nutty depth and a long, slightly sweet finish. Dry-vinified variants, on the other hand, show more freshness and red fruit character.
Pairs well with
- mature hard cheese, such as Graviera or Pecorino
- braised lamb or game ragout
- dark chocolate and dried fruits
- baklava and other honey-based desserts
