Lacrima di Morro d'Alba — one of Italy's most idiosyncratic grape varieties
In the Vinoscout range, you will currently find one wine from this rare variety, the Querci Antica Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC, starting at 11.40 euros. If you are looking for red wine off the beaten track, this is the right place.
Origin & character
Lacrima di Morro d'Alba grows exclusively in the Marche, the hilly region in central Italy facing the Adriatic coast — the cultivation area around the small town of Morro d'Alba is strictly limited, and the variety is hardly to be found anywhere else. The name "Lacrima" (tear) is said to allude to the berry's peculiarity of bursting spontaneously when ripe. In the glass, it shows an intensely violet-red wine with an unusually floral profile: violets and rose dominate the nose, accompanied by dark berries such as blackberry and cherry. The tannins are soft, the acidity moderate — the wine appears velvety and accessible, often ready to drink at a young age.
Pairs well with
- Pasta with wild boar ragù or hearty meat sauces
- Grilled lamb chops with herbs
- Mature Pecorino or Caciotta from the Marche
- Antipasti with salumi and pickled vegetables
