Gouveio – white Douro in its most original form
Gouveio is one of the oldest white grape varieties of the Douro Valley and is still a real insider tip in German-speaking countries. At Vinoscout, you will currently find one wine of this variety, starting at 8.49 euros.
Origin & Character
The variety is deeply rooted in the Douro, where it thrives on the rugged slate terraces between Peso da Régua and the Spanish border. It is known primarily as a component of White Port, but as a still wine, Gouveio shows an independent character: medium body, lively acidity, and aromas of white peach, citrus peel, and a slightly mineral undertone. The heat of the Douro Valley gives the wines fullness without sacrificing freshness. Well-made, Gouveio remains precise on the palate and at the same time pleasantly accessible.
Pairs well with
- Grilled sea bass or sea bream with herbs
- Bacalhau à Brás and other cod dishes of Portuguese cuisine
- Creamy risottos with seafood
- Fresh goat cheeses and mild soft cheeses
