Quick answers

What is Goldriesling – and what distinguishes it from classic Riesling?

Goldriesling is an independent grape variety, not a variety of Riesling. It originated from a cross and ripens earlier, with softer acidity and distinct peach and apple aromas. Characteristically more accessible than Riesling, but with a clear imprint of origin.

Where is Goldriesling grown?

The main growing area is Saxony – one of the northernmost and smallest winegrowing regions in Germany. The continental climate with warm summers and cool nights gives the Goldriesling its lively freshness and aromatic density.

How does dry Goldriesling taste?

Typical are aromas of green apple, vineyard peach, and citrus peel. The acidity is invigorating but not sharp – the wine appears light and directly drinkable. Vinified dry, it remains lean and without residual sweetness.

What dishes does Goldriesling go with?

It pairs well with light cuisine: asparagus, grilled fish, goat cheese, or Asian-spiced dishes with citrus notes. It also cuts a fine figure as an uncomplicated summer wine on the terrace – without food.

How should I serve Goldriesling?

Best served well-chilled at 8–10 °C. This allows the fruit aromas to shine most clearly and preserves the freshness. A slender white wine glass is sufficient – no Burgundy goblet necessary.

Is Goldriesling only available in Saxony?

Practically yes – the variety is hardly grown outside of Saxony. Those looking for it almost always end up at Saxon wineries. You can find more white wines from Germany in our selection.

Goldriesling – a Saxon rarity in the glass

Goldriesling is one of the rarest white wine grape varieties in Germany – and Saxony is its home. At Vinoscout, you will find a small, hand-picked selection of this extraordinary variety.

Origin & Character

Goldriesling originated in the 19th century as a cross between Riesling and Courtillier musqué and was primarily cultivated in the Elbe Valley, where the continental climate and granite weathering soils offer the variety good conditions. Despite the name, Goldriesling is not a direct relative of the classic Rheingau Riesling – character and aromatics differ significantly. In the glass, it shows a pronounced floral aroma, notes of peach and apricot, as well as a light nutmeg tone that makes the variety unmistakable. The acidity is usually milder than in Riesling, which makes the wine appear accessible and fresh. Vinified dry, Goldriesling unfolds a pleasant lightness that makes it an uncomplicated companion for many occasions.

Pairs well with

Asparagus with hollandaise sauce
Asian cuisine with light spice, such as Pad Thai or Vietnamese summer rolls
Fresh goat cheese or mild sliced cheese
Steamed fish and seafood
