Espadeiro at Vinoscout

Espadeiro

Espadeiro is a red grape variety with character, originating in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Its main growing areas are in the Portuguese region of Vinho Verde and in neighboring Galicia in Spain, where it benefits from its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. What makes them so special is their elegant, rather light style, which differs significantly from strong, tannin-heavy red wines. Its thin skin gives it a bright ruby-red color and an alluring bouquet of fresh red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and red currants, often accompanied by floral notes and a subtle spicy undertone. Its proximity to the sea sometimes also gives it a cool, iodine-like minerality. On the palate, it reveals a lively, refreshing acidity and moderate, soft tannins – making it uncomplicated, elegant and extremely drinkable. She is appreciated for her freshness and her ability to wonderfully reflect the character of her Atlantic-influenced homeland. Usually produced as a light red or rosé, it can even surprise with a fine perlage. . Perfectly chilled, it is the ideal accompaniment to tapas, seafood or a balmy summer evening with friends.

Espadeiro – light rosé wine from the Vinho Verde

Espadeiro is one of the quiet stars in the Vinho Verde: little known, but full of character. At Vinoscout, you will find two rosé wines from this grape variety, starting at 5.95 euros.

Origin & character

Espadeiro grows in the northwest of Portugal, in the cool, rainy Vinho Verde wine-growing region. The variety produces light, fresh rosé wines there with lively acidity and a subtle sparkle – typical for the region. In the glass, aromas of red currant, strawberry, and a hint of pomegranate appear, underscored by a floral note. The alcohol remains low, the style uncomplicated and easy-drinking. Espadeiro rosés are not wines for aging – they thrive on their freshness and are best drunk young and well-chilled.

Pairs well with

  • grilled fish and seafood
  • light summer salads with goat cheese
  • tapas and cold appetizers
  • grilled vegetables or antipasti
