Cabernet Cortis – robust new breed with red wine character
In the Vinoscout range, you will currently find a wine made from Cabernet Cortis, including the Tamino cuvée from Schmidt in the Kaiserstuhl – starting at 6.99 euros. The variety is still rare on the shelf, but it is worth discovering for fans of structured red wines.
Origin & character
Cabernet Cortis is a modern cross from the German grape breeding program, developed to combine fungal resistance with red wine quality. In the Kaiserstuhl, where volcanic soils and a warm microclimate meet, the variety ripens into a strong, color-intensive red wine. Typical are dark berry fruit – blackberry, blackcurrant – as well as a pleasant spice that is reminiscent of pepper and herbs. The tannins are comparatively soft for a red wine variety, and the wine remains drinkable and accessible. Those who appreciate Cabernet Sauvignon will find a character-related but independent style in Cabernet Cortis.
Pairs well with
- Grilled beef and lamb chops
- Hearty pasta with tomato-meat sauce
- Mature hard cheese like mountain cheese or Manchego
- Braised lentils with smoked sausage
