Super Tuscans

Super Tuscans are the rebels of Tuscany. In the 1970s, wineries like Tenuta San Guido and Antinori broke with the strict Chianti rules: they planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged them in barriques, and preferred to forgo the DOCG rather than compromise their style. Sassicaia and Tignanello thus became world-class wines – and the emergency solution of "table wine" turned into a category of its own.

Today, the term stands for the great cuvées of Tuscany beyond the Sangiovese canon: the Bordeaux blends from Bolgheri, single-varietal Merlots like Masseto and Redigaffi, but also pure Sangiovese when it is conceived without constraints, as is the case with Cepparello.

In this selection, you will find the classics – Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Tignanello, Guado al Tasso – and the second-generation wines from Tua Rita, Petra, Biserno, and Bibi Graetz. Many of them are also available as magnums or double magnums, should the occasion call for it.

Tignanello, Tuscany

Tignanello, Tuscany 2023

Tignanello is no ordinary Tuscan — it was one of Italy's first wines to blend Sangiovese with international grape varieties, helping to coin the term "Super Tuscan." Antinori, one of Italy's oldest wineries with roots in the 14th century, harvests the vineyard of the same name as one of the last estates in the region, exclusively by hand and with strict selection.
