Grattamacco

Grattamacco was different from the very beginning. In 1977, when hardly anyone believed in Bolgheri, the founders planted their first vines here. The second winery in the region. The first to produce a Bolgheri Rosso. Pioneers who made Vermentino famous before anyone even knew it existed. Today, the estate sits on a wooded hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, overlooking the coast. Sea breezes cool the wine, and the white clay soil retains minerality. The reason? A dried-up salt lake from ancient times – and you can taste it. In the cellar: as little intervention as possible. Everything is done by hand, with minimal technology. Sangiovese, Vermentino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot – each grape gets the time it needs. Wine that doesn't deny its terroir.

Grattamacco Vermentino Bolgheri DOC

Grattamacco –
Bolgheri's second winery, since 1977

Grattamacco is one of the few wineries that have significantly shaped an entire region. Founded in 1977 – as only the second estate in Bolgheri – the winemakers here produce red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, long before coastal Tuscany was taken seriously as a wine region. Vermentino, now a flagship wine of the region, was also cultivated here early on as a distinct variety.

The estate lies on a wooded hill between Castagneto Carducci and the sea. The soil is unusual: white clay overlying the sediment of an ancient salt lake, which imparts a salty minerality to the wine that lingers in the glass. Sea breezes ensure cool nights and slow ripening – both of which benefit the aromatics.

In the cellar, the team works as discreetly as possible: hand-harvesting, minimal intervention, no rush. The wines should not comment on their terroir, but rather reveal it. Anyone who wants to understand Bolgheri starts here.
