Buy liqueurs – from fruity-sweet to bitter-complex

Whether you are looking for a velvety Amaro after a sumptuous dinner, treating yourself to a glass of egg liqueur for dessert, or refining your cocktail with a high-quality fruit liqueur – liqueurs are perhaps the most versatile category in the world of spirits. At Vinoscout, you will find 59 carefully selected liqueurs between 8.70 and 44.99 EUR: from classic house brands to small manufactories that you would look for in vain in the supermarket.

What makes a liqueur?

A spirit may be called a liqueur if it is sweetened with at least 100 grams of sugar per liter and has an alcohol content of at least 15%. This legal basis still leaves producers enormous leeway: aromas from fruits, herbs, spices, nuts, cream, or coffee – everything is possible, and that is exactly what makes the category so exciting.

People began to appreciate liqueurs as a luxury food as early as the 14th century. Because sugar was precious at the time and production was complex, they were initially reserved for the wealthy classes. Today, the variety is accessible to everyone – and the quality is higher than ever.

The most important styles at a glance

Fruit liqueurs

Crème de Cassis made from black currants, Grand Marnier with a bitter orange base, or a classic raspberry liqueur – fruit liqueurs bring the essence of ripe fruits directly into the glass. They work neat as an elegant digestif, but also do excellently in a cocktail or over vanilla ice cream.

Herbal and bitter liqueurs (Amaro)

Amaro is the great art among liqueurs. Dozens of herbs, roots, and spices are macerated and combined into a complex, bittersweet elixir. Whether light and citrus-fresh or dark and resinous – a good Amaro is a digestif that you can talk about for hours.

Nut and almond liqueurs

Amaretto is the best-known representative: warm, almond-like, with a pleasant sweetness that never seems intrusive. Perfect neat, on ice, or as a base for the Amaretto Sour.

Cream and egg liqueurs

Creamy, rich, and irresistible – egg liqueur and cream liqueurs like Amarula made from South African marula fruits are classics that simply belong to festive occasions. Served cold or poured over desserts, they unfold their full potential.

Coffee and chocolate liqueurs

Kahlúa, the Mexican coffee liqueur, is representative of a whole family of aromatic liqueurs that combine roasted aromas with sweetness. Whether in an Espresso Martini or neat after a meal – here, pleasure meets alertness.

When does which liqueur fit?

  • As a digestif: Amaro, herbal liqueur, or a dry nut liqueur – ideal after a heavy meal to gently stimulate digestion.
  • For dessert: Fruit liqueurs with panna cotta or sorbet, egg liqueur with cake and pastries, chocolate liqueur with dark mousse au chocolat.
  • In a cocktail: Grand Marnier in a Margarita, Kahlúa in a White Russian, Crème de Cassis in a Kir Royal – liqueurs are the heart of countless classics.
  • Neat on ice: Many fruit and cream liqueurs unfold their best side on ice – simple, relaxed, enjoyable.
  • As a gift: A high-quality bottle of liqueur is always a safe choice – for wine lovers, cocktail fans, and everyone who enjoys good things.
