From August Diehl to a three-generation business on the southern Wine Route

The A. Diehl wine, sparkling wine and distillery estate has its roots in the 19th century, when August Diehl first planted vines in Edesheim and thus laid the foundation for a business that is now managed in the third generation by Andreas and Alexandra-Isabell Diehl. What was once a manageable family business has grown over the decades into one of the best-known wineries in the Southern Palatinate — without losing the character of a family business. Edesheim itself lies between the edge of the Haardt mountains and the Rhine plain, embedded in a landscape where enjoyment and hospitality have been part of everyday life for centuries. The press house, the heart of the estate, stands on a property from 1821 — renovated according to modern aspects, but with the original character of the old walls.

Origin first: vineyard, soils and a credo of 20 grape varieties

The philosophy of the house is clearly formulated: the basis of a good wine lies in the vineyard. Andreas and Alexandra-Isabell Diehl want to bring the origin of their grapes into the glass as directly as possible — single-varietal representatives of the terroir that make the soils and the microclimate of their site visible. The vineyards stretch around Edesheim, from St. Martin to Landau, and offer an unusually wide variety: sandstone and slate soils in the Burrweiler Altenforst, loam and loess components in the Edesheimer Rosengarten, plus defining single sites such as the Edesheimer Mandelhang and the Weyher Michelsberg. In total, the winery cultivates around 80 hectares of vineyards with up to 20 different grape varieties — classic Palatinate varieties as well as international varieties that the estate has introduced with a pioneering spirit, such as Sauvignon Blanc.

In the cellar, the Diehls work with modern technology without losing contact with the fruit. Each grape variety and each site is considered and vinified individually in order to optimally work out the respective character. The winery is a member of professional associations such as Pro Riesling, the Sommelier Union, Slow Food and the Pfälzer Edelbrand e. V. — an indication of the breadth of the business beyond pure viticulture.

Fruit-intensive, straightforward, typical Palatinate — and more than just wine

What distinguishes the wines of A. Diehl is their direct, fruit-driven profile. The favorable location between the edge of the Haardt mountains and the Rhine plain — one of the warmest wine-growing climates in Germany, where even figs and kiwis thrive — gives the grapes sufficient ripeness for lively, accessible wines with clear varietal typicity. The flagship is the "Eins zu Eins" line: single-varietal wines, including Blanc de Noirs, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer, which consistently place the individual grape variety at the center. The portfolio is supplemented by sparkling wines — including a cuvée produced according to traditional bottle fermentation — as well as artisanal distillates: apricot brandy and Williams Christ pear brandy from their own fruit round off the range and show that the term "enjoyment" is actually taken seriously here. For those looking at the future of the estate: the two daughters Anna and Amélie are to take over the business one day — the fourth generation is already waiting in the starting blocks.
