It would have been easier to rest on their laurels. But the Castell family thinks ahead. They preserve their expertise, pass on their passion to the next generation, and cultivate their châteaux and estates with joy and vision. For them, wine is more than a product: it's about culture. About sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas with chefs, sommeliers, and all those who love good taste. Producing regional wines and Grands Crus is one thing. Another is keeping nothing to themselves. Sustainably, responsibly, and with heart. Because at Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus, they live by the conviction that wine must follow its own vision. Persistently, boldly, and with a flame that carries on – from generation to generation.

About Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus

From the founding of a Bordeaux négociant to a family empire with 20 Châteaux

The history of Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus began in 1949 in Bordeaux, when Pierre Castel founded a small wine trading company together with his brothers and sisters. What started as a family négoce business grew over decades into one of the most important wine houses in France. Since 1957, the family has been successively purchasing its own wineries — the entry into the Château life took place with the acquisition of Château de Goëlane in Bordeaux Supérieur. Today, the portfolio includes 20 family wineries spread across Bordeaux, the Loire, Provence, and Languedoc, supplemented by a network of Grands Crus partners whose wines are distributed in over 80 countries. Another milestone: in 2011, Château Beychevelle, a Grand Cru Classé de 1855, joined the house. The company headquarters in Blanquefort, north of Bordeaux, remains the operational center of all wine activities to this day.

Living soils instead of system maintenance: sustainability as a production principle

At Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus, sustainable viticulture is not a communication topic, but a structured work program. All family estates are certified according to the Terra Vitis standard — the only sustainability framework developed exclusively for wine production. Individual domains also work according to the criteria of organic farming. Technical Director Cédric Pla has formulated a common goal for all estates: living soils as the foundation of wine quality. Specifically, this means mechanical soil cultivation instead of herbicides, targeted cover cropping to promote soil biodiversity, and retention areas for rainwater, which simultaneously offer habitat for insects and migratory birds. Over 30% of the total area of the estates is designated as agro-ecological infrastructure — forests, hedges, beehives. Château Montlabert was included in the classification of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion in 2022, which proves the consistency of this work.

Bordeaux classics, Médoc finesse, and regional diversity from a single source

The assortment of Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus spans a wide arc: from the structured Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois — represented by Château Barreyres and Château d'Arcins — to the sweet Sauternes offshoot Carmes de Rieussec, to fruity, accessible wines such as Château du Bousquet from the Côtes de Bourg or the Beaujolais Villages Nouveau from Bichat Frères. The strength of the house lies in its dual role: as an estate owner who accompanies every vintage from the vineyard to the cellar, and as an experienced négociant who selects and distributes Grands Crus from all over Bordeaux. Anyone who has wines from Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus in their glass always gets both: artisanal precision from family responsibility and the stylistic depth that makes Bordeaux one of the most expressive wine regions in the world.

Jürgen P. about Tour Prignac Grande Reserve Médoc
Everyone in our social circle enjoyed it very much. Better than champagne, as it has less carbonation. Can you recommend a good red wine from France (Cotes du rhone ? ) Horst Brill
Horst B. about Malesan Crémant de Bordeaux Brut
This wine can be recommended, we have already ordered it for the second time and are very satisfied, for dinner but also just a glass in the evening...

Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus —
Bordeaux with attitude and vision

Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus stands for a Bordeaux that does not rest on its labels. The Castel family manages its Châteaux and estates with a clear ambition: to pass on craftsmanship, not just sell wine. From classic country wines to aged Grands Crus, the range reflects the entire spectrum of the Bordeaux appellation — precisely vinified and sustainably managed.

What distinguishes the house is the exchange: with chefs, sommeliers, and everyone who takes taste seriously. Wine is understood here as a cultural asset, not a mass product. Every bottle carries the conviction that a good wine must follow its own ideas — persistently, without compromises regarding the terroir.

The next generation of the family continues this path: responsible in the vineyard, bold in the cellar. Anyone looking for Bordeaux beyond marketing logic will find wines with real character at Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus — from the entry-level Château to the cellar-worthy Grand Cru.
