Auxerrois dry pine

Auxerrois is the quiet strength of the Kaiserstuhl region—a grape variety that doesn't make as many headlines as Pinot Noir or Pinot Gris, but surprises when paired with the right terroir. The Kiefer winery in Eichstetten demonstrates what's possible when volcanic rock and loamy loess soil come together.

The Eichstetten terroir on the Kaiserstuhl is among the warmest in Germany. The volcanic rock subsoil stores heat and imparts minerality, while the top layer of clay retains moisture and adds body. Both qualities are reflected in the glass.

Straw-yellow in color, with a bouquet of wildflowers, a touch of elderflower, and a light herbal note—lemon balm, perhaps a hint of thyme. On the palate, fresh and medium-bodied, with a soft texture and a clean, dry finish without harsh acidity. Neither heavy nor lightweight—a wine with a clear profile.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C . Pairs well with tarte flambée with crème fraîche and leeks, pan-fried pike-perch fillet, or a dinner with goat cheese and fresh herbs. Drink now.

Kiefer

The Friedrich Kiefer winery in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl looks back on a history that began in 1851 – founded by a teacher from the Markgräflerland region who passionately dedicated himself to what was then a completely new endeavor. Since 2008, the winery has been run by Helene, a certified oenologist, and Martin, a certified engineer, who cultivates over 100 hectares of vines on the characteristic volcanic weathering rock and loess of the Kaiserstuhl region, together with long-standing partner winegrowers. Their motto is "Wine / Style / Performance" – and this is reflected both in their meticulously crafted wines and in labels that inspire enjoyment rather than mere show.
