Pine Dance on the Volcano Rotling off-dry

A Rotling – not a rosé wine blend of white and red must, but a blend of red and white grapes harvested and fermented together. This gives the "dance on the volcano" a unique character that defies categorization as either a rosé or a white wine.

Behind the Kiefer winery is a family-run business in Baden, located in the Kaiserstuhl region – that volcanic hilly area between the Black Forest and the Rhine, which is among the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany. The name says it all: volcanic soil made up of loess and weathered basalt noticeably shapes the wines here.

This cuvée blends five grape varieties – Müller-Thurgau, Regent, Muscaris, Pinot Noir, and Muscat – resulting in a ruby-red wine with bright reflections. The nose offers aromas of red currant, strawberry, and a subtle hint of Muscat. The off-dry designation here refers to a delicate residual sweetness that supports the vibrant fruit without being cloying. The finish is fresh and light, with the lightness of a white wine rather than the heaviness of a red.

The Friedrich Kiefer winery in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl looks back on a history that began in 1851 – founded by a teacher from the Markgräflerland region who passionately dedicated himself to what was then a completely new endeavor. Since 2008, the winery has been run by Helene, a certified oenologist, and Martin, a certified engineer, who cultivates over 100 hectares of vines on the characteristic volcanic weathering rock and loess of the Kaiserstuhl region, together with long-standing partner winegrowers. Their motto is "Wine / Style / Performance" – and this is reflected both in their meticulously crafted wines and in labels that inspire enjoyment rather than mere show.
