Dr. Loosen

The German winery is located in the Palatinate region and is managed by Dr. Ernst F. Loosen. Its 22 hectares of vineyards are divided among six different sites, including the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, and the Graacher Himmelreich. The slate soils act as excellent heat reservoirs for cool nights, and the Moselle River reflects sunlight onto the steep slopes where the grapes ripen. The winery cultivates and uses almost exclusively Riesling grapes for its production. Only 2% of the wines are made from Pinot Noir varieties, with occasional use of Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder. The family-run business produces up to 180,000 bottles of wine annually.

Dr. Loosen —
Riesling from the Moselle slate, six steep slopes

Dr. Loosen is one of the most renowned Riesling producers on the Moselle . Ernst F. Loosen manages the family winery in Bernkastel and cultivates 22 hectares of vineyards spread across six historic sites—including the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, and the Graacher Himmelreich. All three embody what defines Moselle Riesling: steep slopes, slate soil, and precision.

The blue slate stores heat during the day and releases it to the vines on cool nights. The Moselle River itself reflects sunlight onto the slopes—a natural interplay that explains the slow ripening and characteristic acidity of the wines. Riesling accounts for over 98% of production; Burgundy varieties and, occasionally, Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder complement the range in small quantities.

Up to 180,000 bottles are produced annually—from approachable estate wines to the great single-vineyard Rieslings, which have drinking windows of ten years or more. Anyone looking for Mosel Riesling in its classic form will find a reliable source at Dr. Loosen.
