Dr. Loosen Riesling off-dry

Ernst Loosen is considered one of the most influential Riesling ambassadors of the Mosel — and this Off-Dry entry-level wine shows why: accessible, but not arbitrary.

The Weingut Dr. Loosen in Bernkastel-Kues has been cultivating some of the steepest slate sites on the Middle Mosel for generations. Ernst Loosen took over in 1988 and consistently focused on low yields, old vines, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The Off-Dry Riesling is the entry into the range — vinified with the same care as the great single-vineyard wines.

An intense golden yellow in the glass. The nose opens with peach, lychee, and a hint of white blossoms. On the palate, the typical Mosel acidity shows, which keeps the residual sweetness in balance — no sugar that sticks, but a fresh, fruity pull with a clean finish.

VDP Member Estate

The German winery is located in the Palatinate region and is managed by Dr. Ernst F. Loosen. Its 22 hectares of vineyards are divided among six different sites, including the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, and the Graacher Himmelreich. The slate soils act as excellent heat reservoirs for cool nights, and the Moselle River reflects sunlight onto the steep slopes where the grapes ripen. The winery cultivates and uses almost exclusively Riesling grapes for its production. Only 2% of the wines are made from Pinot Noir varieties, with occasional use of Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder. The family-run business produces up to 180,000 bottles of wine annually.
