Dr. Loosen Blauschiefer Riesling trocken is a classic dry Mosel Riesling with seductive fruit, distinct raciness, and a firm, powerful body. The grapes come from very good sites with characteristic blue slate soils that are not vinified separately.

This wine is produced from sites that are not classified as 1st growths in the Prussian vineyard map but possess the characteristic blue slate soil. This wine is always vinified as a dry Riesling and produced as an estate Riesling without a vineyard name, focusing on the idea of creating a Riesling that reflects the terroir of the region.
The stony slate soil, which can be seen on the surface of the vineyard, absorbs and stores the heat of the day. During the cooler nights, the heat is slowly released back into the soil, creating a very balanced heat regulation. The slate itself is rich in potassium and is therefore a natural source of minerals, which gives the Mosel Riesling its unmistakable mineral and lively character.

How does the Blauschiefer Riesling from Dr. Loosen taste?
Dry Mosel Riesling with lively fruit, clear acidity, and the mineral pull that characterizes the blue slate of the region. The body is firm and powerful for an estate Riesling — not a light summer wine glass, but a wine with substance.
What does the wine pair best with?
Classically with fish and seafood, but also with asparagus, goat cheese, or burrata. The acidity stands up to the fat of risotto, and it works just as well with poultry in a light sauce.
At what temperature should I serve it?
Best at 8–10 °C — i.e., well chilled, but not ice-cold. This allows fruit and minerality to come to the fore equally.
What does "Gutsriesling" mean — is that a simple entry-level wine?
Not in a derogatory sense. Dr. Loosen combines grapes here from several blue slate sites that are not vinified as single-vineyard wines. The goal is a wine that shows the terroir of the Mosel as a whole — not a single-vineyard wine, but no compromise.
How long does the opened bottle keep?
Well-sealed in the refrigerator, the wine keeps for two to three days. The acidity protects it — but you will notice that it often seems even more open on the second day than immediately after opening.
The Winery
The German winery is based in the Palatinate and is managed by Dr. Ernst F. Loosen. The 22 hectares of vineyards are divided into six different sites, which include the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, or the Graacher Himmelreich.
The slate soils serve as good heat reservoirs for cool nights, and the Moselle river reflects sunlight onto the steep slopes during the day, where the grapes ripen.
Almost exclusively the Riesling grape variety is grown and used for production at the winery. Only 2% of the wines are made from Burgundy varieties and occasionally from Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder. The family business produces up to 180,000 bottles of wine annually.
