Dr. Loosen Blauschiefer Riesling dry

Dr. Loosen Blauschiefer Riesling trocken is a classic dry Mosel Riesling with seductive fruit, pronounced character, and a firm, robust body. The grapes come from excellent vineyard sites with characteristic blue slate soils, which are not vinified separately. A delight for every day! This wine is produced from vineyards not designated as "First Growth" on the Prussian vineyard map, but which possess the characteristic blue slate soil. This wine is always vinified as a dry Riesling and produced as an estate Riesling without a vineyard name, the primary goal being to create a Riesling that reflects the terroir of the region. The stony slate soil, visible on the surface of the vineyard, absorbs and stores the heat of the day. During the cooler nights, the heat is slowly released back into the soil, creating a very balanced temperature. The slate itself is very rich in potassium and is therefore a natural source of minerals, which gives Moselriesling its distinctive mineral and lively character.

our favorite Riesling from the Moselle. Every vintage has been very good so far. "Granny Smith" comes through well.

VDP Member Estate

The German winery is located in the Palatinate region and is managed by Dr. Ernst F. Loosen. Its 22 hectares of vineyards are divided among six different sites, including the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Erdener Treppchen, and the Graacher Himmelreich. The slate soils act as excellent heat reservoirs for cool nights, and the Moselle River reflects sunlight onto the steep slopes where the grapes ripen. The winery cultivates and uses almost exclusively Riesling grapes for its production. Only 2% of the wines are made from Pinot Noir varieties, with occasional use of Cabernet Sauvignon or Dornfelder. The family-run business produces up to 180,000 bottles of wine annually.
