Buy Barolo – the King of Wines from Piedmont
There are wines you drink – and wines you experience. Barolo belongs to the second category. No other Italian red wine combines so much depth, complexity, and aging potential in a single glass. No wonder it has carried the nickname "King of Wines" for generations. At Vinoscout, you will find a carefully curated selection of 30 Barolo wines from renowned Piedmontese producers – from accessible entry-level bottles to large magnums for special occasions.
Character and taste: What makes Barolo so special?
Barolo is a red wine with an unmistakable signature. The Nebbiolo grape variety brings a characteristic combination of high acidity, powerful tannin, and a distinct aroma profile that is second to none. In the glass, it shows a ruby-red color, often with a garnet shimmer – a first sign of the maturity and complexity that awaits you.
On the nose, Barolo opens with aromas of dried roses, cherries, and violets, which develop over time into notes of tar, leather, tobacco, licorice, and forest mushrooms. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with a long, mineral finish. Young Barolos often need some air – a good decanting of at least an hour is not an exaggeration, but respect for the wine.
Origin and production: The Langhe as the cradle of Nebbiolo
Barolo carries the DOCG seal, Italy's highest quality level, and may only be produced in a clearly defined area in the Langhe hills south of Alba in Piedmont. The municipalities of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, and Monforte d'Alba form the heart of this wine region. The soils differ significantly: calcareous clay soils in the western part produce more elegant, earlier accessible wines, while the iron-rich sandstone soils in the east are known for particularly long-lived, tannin-rich characters.
Vinification is strictly regulated: Barolo must age for at least 38 months, at least 18 of which in wooden barrels. For the Riserva variant, it is even 62 months. Whether winemakers rely on large Slavonian oak barrels (Botti) or small barriques is a question of style that the Piedmontese wine scene has been passionately debating for decades.
Food recommendations: Wine and cuisine on equal footing
Barolo is a wine that needs a dish on equal footing. It unfolds most beautifully with hearty, aromatic dishes:
- Braised beef – classic Piedmontese, such as Brasato al Barolo
- Game dishes such as venison, wild boar, or roe deer in rich sauces
- Truffle dishes – the white Alba truffle is the natural partner of Barolo
- Aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno
- Pasta with meat ragù, such as Tajarin with hare sugo
Serve Barolo at about 17 to 18 degrees Celsius in a large Burgundy glass, which allows the aromas to unfold optimally.
