Anniversario 62 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva

A Primitivo that demonstrates what Apulian cooperative work means at the highest level: concentrated fruit, depth through age and a production process that respects the origin.

Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 in the province of Taranto – hence the name Anniversario 62. Today, 19 winegrowing families work together, and for this Riserva, only grapes from vines, some over 60 years old, are used. The vineyards near San Marzano di San Giuseppe and Sava lie on iron-rich clay-limestone soils; the deep-rooted, old vines produce small, aromatically concentrated berries even in the hot Apulian summers. Winemaker Davide Ragusa ages the wine for 18 months after fermentation in a combination of French and American oak barrels.

In the glass, it shines a deep ruby color with a violet rim. On the nose: ripe plum, black cherry, followed by cocoa, roasted coffee, and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, with velvety, well-integrated tannins and a warming finish where dark fruit and spice notes linger together.

Drinking window: now until 2030. Best served at 16–18 °C , decant after 30 minutes. Pairs well with braised lamb shank, venison ragout with porcini mushrooms, roast beef with red wine sauce, or mature Pecorino cheese.

Feudi di San Marzano

What nineteen winegrowing families from San Marzano di San Giuseppe sealed with a handshake in 1962 is today one of the most renowned names in Apulia: Feudi di San Marzano. Around 1,500 winegrowers cultivate more than 1,200 hectares of vines together in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP, many of them still using the traditional Alberello system – the bush-trained vines that have defined the character of Salento for generations. The red limestone soil, the sun, and the sea breezes between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas shape wines that are powerful yet precise. Every grape is harvested by hand, and chemical fertilizers are strictly avoided.
