as, if! Primitivo di Manduria DOC

Deep ruby red with purple reflections in the glass — the as, if! Primitivo di Manduria reveals its defining characteristics: density, ripeness, and character. This is Puglia in its direct, unvarnished form.

Behind this wine is Cantina Torrevento from the province of Terra di Bari, not far from the Alta Murgia National Park. Under Francesco Liantonio, the winery has been committed for years to preserving old, indigenous grape varieties of Apulia—including Primitivo, which finds its most famous expression here in the Manduria DOC. The as, if! is an original creation, developed in close collaboration with the winery. The 2021 vintage was awarded 91 points by Falstaff.

On the nose, the wine opens with candied orange peel, Amarena cherry, and a hint of rose—followed by leather, coffee, and vanilla. On the palate, it is opulent and full-bodied, with dense, ripe tannins and a long finish reminiscent of dark chocolate. Typical of Primitivo di Manduria: plenty of fruit, plenty of warmth, and few rough edges.

Pairs well with braised lamb, venison ragù, or aged Pecorino cheese. Serving temperature 17–18 °C , drink now or store until 2027.

Torrevento

Torrevento from Corato in Apulia bears its name for good reason: "Tower of the Wind"—for it is the constant wind over the Alta Murgia that provides natural ventilation to the vines and has given the winery its identity for generations. The Liantonio family's story begins in 1913, when the grandfather of the current president, Francesco Liantonio, emigrated to New York at the age of 16. He returned in 1923 and in 1948 acquired a 17th-century Baroque Benedictine monastery along with 57 hectares of vineyards. Today, Torrevento cultivates 500 hectares throughout Apulia and is considered one of the most dedicated advocates of indigenous grape varieties such as Nero di Troia, Primitivo, and Negroamaro. Multiple Gambero Rosso awards, including the Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses), attest to the fact that this commitment is reflected in the wine.
