Torrevento Bolonero Castel del Monte

The Bolonero comes from the Apulian plateau – one of the few wine-growing regions in southern Italy where the climate is cool enough to bring structure and freshness to a red wine.

Torrevento is one of the most reliable wineries in the Castel del Monte DOC. This winery north of Bari has been working with the region's indigenous grape varieties for decades, including Nero di Troia – the basis of Bolonero. This grape variety ripens slowly, develops natural acidity, and in good years produces wines with real structure.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose offers aromas of dark blackberry, plum, and a hint of dried herbs. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with tannins that are present but smooth – the typical character of Nero di Troia when not over-extracted. The finish offers a touch of spice and a lively acidity.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Pairs well with lamb chops, orecchiette al ragù, aged pecorino, or tomato sugo with aubergine. Drinking window: now until 2027.

Torrevento

Torrevento from Corato in Apulia bears its name for good reason: "Tower of the Wind"—for it is the constant wind over the Alta Murgia that provides natural ventilation to the vines and has given the winery its identity for generations. The Liantonio family's story begins in 1913, when the grandfather of the current president, Francesco Liantonio, emigrated to New York at the age of 16. He returned in 1923 and in 1948 acquired a 17th-century Baroque Benedictine monastery along with 57 hectares of vineyards. Today, Torrevento cultivates 500 hectares throughout Apulia and is considered one of the most dedicated advocates of indigenous grape varieties such as Nero di Troia, Primitivo, and Negroamaro. Multiple Gambero Rosso awards, including the Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses), attest to the fact that this commitment is reflected in the wine.
