Passione Reale Appassimento Puglia

The Passione Reale, the true, royal passion, is an Appassimento, a wine whose grapes were dried on the vine! This form of winemaking is currently very modern, but stems from an old tradition in Italy! Originally, the grapes for Recioto della Valpolicella were dried in the Veneto. Then came the dry version, Amarone della Valpolicella, in Lombardy the Sforzato di Valtellina, in Tuscany the Governo and Vin Santo. Various Passito in all possible regions - the finest comes from the island of Pantelleria - and just in Apulia where the grapes are either dried on racks or, as with the Passione Reale from Torrevento, on the vine. What makes it unique is the relatively low alcohol content of 13% vol., and thus the Passione Reale!

Aging takes place for several months in steel tanks and large wooden barrels.

In the nose, surprisingly fresh but also very intense with spicy tendencies, fine herbs, black ripe cherries, and berries.

On the palate velvety, round, soft, very intense but surprisingly not too heavy, finally a representative of this modern grape variety that does not stand out due to its jammy and alcohol-heavy heaviness but tastes fruity, juicy, full, and is gladly drunk further. Main characteristics are herbs, elderberry, blackberries, and black cherries. Certainly, its just 13% vol. is a rarity in this genre!

The Winery

Torrevento

Torrevento from Corato in Apulia bears its name for a good reason: "Tower of the Wind" – because it is the constant wind over the Alta Murgia that gives the vines natural ventilation and has given the winery its identity for generations.

The history of the Liantonio family begins in 1913, when the grandfather of the current president Francesco Liantonio emigrated to New York at the age of 16, returned in 1923, and in 1948 acquired a 17th-century Baroque Benedictine monastery along with 57 hectares of vineyards.

Today, Torrevento manages 500 hectares throughout Apulia and is considered one of the most consistent advocates of autochthonous grape varieties such as Nero di Troia, Primitivo, and Negroamaro. Multiple Gambero Rosso awards with the Tre Bicchieri prove that this standard arrives in the bottle.
