Alpha Special Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon
The Alpha Special Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon is the Chilean powerhouse of Viña Montes – the pioneering winery founded by Aurelio Montes in 1988, convinced that Chile could produce world-class wines when no one else believed it. This blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 5% Carménère comes exclusively from the Finca de Marchigüe in the Colchagua Valley – a flat to gently rolling terroir with shallow, clay-rich soils that retain water well and contain a high proportion of rounded stones, which naturally stress the grapes and ensure maximum concentration.
The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully selected, and vinified after a 5-day cold maceration with controlled yeasts. Sixty percent of the wine then matures for 16 months in first-use French oak barrels – a decision that lends the wine depth and structure without masking its varietal fruit character.
In the glass, a deep, rich ruby red. The nose opens complexly and invitingly with ripe plums, cherries, dried figs, and black pepper, underpinned by graphite, blond tobacco, dark chocolate, and a hint of mocha. On the palate, well-structured and full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a long, elegant finish.
At 14.5% ABV, decanted for at least 30 minutes and served at 17–19 °C, with aging potential until 2033. A natural accompaniment to grilled beef, spaghetti Bolognese, pork chops with mushroom sauce and aged cheese – powerful, sun-drenched and unmistakably Chilean.
