What exactly is a Piccolo and what formats are there?

A Piccolo is any wine bottle smaller than the standard size (0.75 l). With us, you will find formats from 0.2 l (classic Piccolo) to 0.25 l to the half bottle with 0.375 l — and occasionally also 0.5 l. The quality in the glass is identical to the large bottle.

Is a small bottle of wine really worth it — or is it just packaging?

Small bottles mature more slowly than large ones because the ratio of air to wine is less favorable. For wines that are to be drunk young, this hardly plays a role. For luscious wines, the small format is even classic — Sauternes and Trockenbeerenauslesen are traditionally bottled in 0.375 l bottles.

For which occasions are small bottles best suited?

Whenever a whole bottle would be too much: a glass with a cheese board, a sparkling wine as a small gift, a dessert wine to end an evening for two. They are also ideal for trying a variety or region before you buy a larger quantity.

Which wine types are available in small bottles at Vinoscout?

The selection ranges from dry Riesling and red wine to sparkling wine to Port wines, Madeira, Sherry, and luscious wines. Especially with sweet and oxidative styles, the small format is particularly practical because a whole bottle is rarely drunk at once.

How long does an opened small wine bottle last?

A 0.2 or 0.375 l bottle is usually calculated for one evening — so it is usually drunk completely. You should drink leftovers of sparkling wine within 24 hours; still wine lasts 2–3 days in the refrigerator, oxidative styles like Madeira or Sherry significantly longer.

Are Piccolo bottles suitable as a gift or small present?

Yes — precisely because they do not require a big commitment. A half bottle of a good Champagne or a small format of a classic Bordeaux seems thoughtful without being too much. For wine novices, they are also a low-risk entry into new styles.
