Castile – powerful red wines from the Spanish high plateau
Castile-León in northwestern Spain is one of the country's most significant wine regions. The vast high plateau at around 800 to 1000 meters altitude ensures an extreme climate with hot summers and cold winters – and that is exactly what shapes the character of the wines: powerful, structured, with good acidity and depth. At the center is the red grape variety Tempranillo, which is aged here under different names and in different styles into impressive wines.
Ribera del Duero – the heart
The best-known appellation of the region is the Ribera del Duero, which stands for dark, tannic red wines with aging potential. Anyone who knows wines from this area knows: they often need some time, but reward patience with complexity and elegance. Large bodegas like Alión or La Rioja Alta have estates here that count among the most sought-after in Spain.
