Somontano – Spain's wine region at the foot of the Pyrenees
Somontano is located in the northeast of Spain, in the region of Aragón, on the southern side of the Pyrenees. The name says it all: "below the mountains". The vineyards at an altitude of 350 to 650 meters ensure a climate with warm days and cool nights – a good prerequisite for wines with structure and, at the same time, fresh fruit.
Versatile and internationally influenced
Somontano is one of the most modern DOs in Spain. In addition to local varieties, international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer have become firmly established here. The result is wines that are accessible and well-structured – with recognizable character, but without the rustic heaviness of some other Spanish regions. Red Somontano wines often show dark fruit and pleasant spice, while the whites benefit from the high altitude with lively freshness.
