Enate
Read more Read less
Founded in 1991 in Somontano, Aragon, Bodega Enate has since become one of the most influential names in the Spanish wine scene, now cultivating 500 hectares of vineyards at the foot of the Pyrenees. What sets Enate apart from other bodegas is its deeply ingrained three-pronged identity: quality winemaking, unwavering sustainability, and a profound connection to contemporary art, which is reflected even in the wine labels. Vineyards at an altitude of around 600 meters, sandy loam soils, and a daily temperature range of up to 15°C ensure slow-ripening grapes with pronounced varietal character. The result is wines that prioritize balance and elegance – not a flashy display, but precise craftsmanship from the heart of Aragon.

About Enate
From 25 hectares to the backbone of Somontano
Bodega Enate was founded in 1991 as Viñedos y Crianzas del Alto Aragón — at that time with just 25 hectares of vineyards in the Aragonese Somontano, at the foot of the Pyrenees, not far from the small town of Barbastro. The name comes from the village of the same name in the middle of the vineyards. What began as a clear quality claim in a region that was little noticed at the time grew consistently over the following decades: today, Enate manages around 500 hectares and is one of the defining bodegas of the Spanish wine scene. Decisive for the early style assessment was the appointment of cellar master Jesús Artajona, who had studied oenology in Bordeaux and gained experience at Château Margaux, among others — an influence that is still readable in the range today.
Terroir, craftsmanship, and a lived connection to art
The vineyards are located at around 600 meters above sea level, protected by the Sierra de Guara and characterized by calcareous clay soils. A daily amplitude of up to 15 °C between summer day and night slows down ripening and preserves varietal typicity. All wines are produced exclusively from their own harvest — no purchased material. In the cellar, there are over 4,000 oak barrels, 70% of which are from France and 30% from America, which gives the red wine focus (around 85% of production) structure and depth. Sustainability is not a marketing term here: Enate has geared the entire cellar technology toward energy efficiency and is continuously working to reduce the bodega's ecological footprint.
Art is not decoration at Enate, but a structural part of the corporate identity. Since its founding, the bodega has housed a collection of over 400 works of contemporary art — Spanish and international positions, including Antonio Saura and Antoni Tàpies. Each wine is firmly linked to an artist: the label shows a work created exclusively for Enate. Since 1997, the bodega has awarded a scholarship to emerging artists from the region every two years, thereby actively promoting young artistic talent.
A range that has redefined Somontano
Cellar master Artajona opted early on for international grape varieties that correspond particularly well to the climate of the Somontano: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay ripen more slowly and aromatically denser here than in warmer southern Spanish locations. The Chardonnay Barrique — the first label that Antonio Saura designed for Enate — is exemplary of this approach: barrel fermentation and yeast aging add complexity to the fruit-driven basic character without overpowering it. The Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva is considered the flagship of the bodega and shows how depth and balance can go together in the Somontano. The spectrum is complemented by the fresh-mineral Chardonnay 234 (steel tank, six months on the lees), the aromatic Gewürztraminer, as well as cuvées of Cabernet and Merlot, which depict different stages of maturity from the accessible entry-level wine to the age-worthy Reserva. Wines that you can follow as vintage companions over several years.

Bodega Enate –
Precise viticulture from the heart of Aragon
Bodega Enate was founded in 1991 in the Aragonese Somontano – a region that has only been recognized as an independent D.O. since the 1980s and has continuously gained profile since then. Today, Enate manages 500 hectares of vineyards at the foot of the Pyrenees, at an altitude of around 600 meters. Sandy clay soils and a daily temperature amplitude of up to 15 °C slow down ripening and give the grapes time to develop varietal typicity and structure.
What distinguishes Enate from other bodegas in the region is a consistently lived triple identity: precise quality viticulture, sustainable management, and a serious connection to contemporary art – which is not meant as a marketing gesture, but extends all the way to the labels. Each vintage features an original work by a contemporary artist, selected by the bodega itself.
In the glass, the wines show a focus on balance rather than volume: clear fruit, well-integrated structure, and a style that combines Mediterranean warmth with the freshness of the high altitude. Whether Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, or the regionally typical Moristel – Enate articulates Aragon with precision and without exaggeration.
