Bodegas Protos

Bodegas Protos – a story that began in 1927. Eleven friends, who had known each other since childhood, joined forces to preserve their families' winemaking tradition. Their dream: not only to produce great wines, but also to put the Ribera del Duero region back on the world's radar. Today, the cooperative is owned by over 250 families – many in their third generation. They draw on the knowledge of their ancestors while keeping a forward-looking perspective. A team of eight oenologists and eight engineers works under the leadership of Marilena Bonilla. The result: Spain's most visited winery in Ribera del Duero (40,000 visitors annually) and the one with the most Twitter followers. Ribera del Duero, as it truly is.

Bodegas Protos –
a cooperative with history, Ribera del Duero

Bodegas Protos was founded in 1927 out of a friendship: Eleven men, who had known each other since childhood, joined forces to preserve their families' winemaking traditions and to put Ribera del Duero back on the map as a wine region. What began as a small community project is today a cooperative with over 250 member families, many of them already in their third generation.

The work in the cellar is in the hands of an eight-person team of oenologists led by Marilena Bonilla. Their approach combines the traditional knowledge of the founding families with modern cellar technology – without losing the character of the Tempranillo grape from the high plateau between Burgos and Valladolid. The limestone and clay soils, the long summers and cold nights at an altitude of over 800 meters shape the wines with structure, depth, and a cool fruitiness that distinguishes Ribera del Duero from other Spanish red wine regions.

With around 40,000 visitors annually, Protos is the most visited winery in the region – a testament to the fact that not only wine, but also a vibrant wine culture is cultivated here. In the Vinoscout range, you'll find a selection ranging from the approachable Joven to the mature Reserva.
