His rise from farm laborer to legendary winemaker: at 42, he took out a loan, bought a vineyard and old winery equipment – and founded Tinto Pesquera. His motto: uncompromising quality, high extract, Tempranillo. The region was unknown at the time – he made it famous. To this day, he remains down-to-earth, tireless, and a master of his craft. In the 1970s, when many winegrowers in the Ribera del Duero were abandoning their vines for sugar beets, Alejandro Fernández took the opposite approach. At the age of 42, he took out a loan, bought old vineyards and used winery equipment – and founded Tinto Pesquera. What seemed like a risky venture at the time became the founding story of an entire region.

His style is unmistakable: Tempranillo with plenty of extract, structure, and depth, aged for long maturation. No compromises on the raw materials, no shortcuts in the cellar. This approach made Pesquera internationally renowned in the 1980s – and transformed the previously little-noticed Ribera del Duero into a serious wine region in Spain.

Today, Fernández runs four wineries, three of which he founded for his daughters. The farmhand who became a legend can still be found in the vineyard. His wines reflect this dedication: dark fruit, firm tannins, and a lingering finish.
