Bodegas Alión –
Tempranillo from the heart of the Ribera del Duero
Bodegas Alión was founded in 1991 as an independent project of the Vega Sicilia family – with the aim of creating a modern, more approachable red wine from the Ribera del Duero without sacrificing depth. The winery is located in Peñafiel, in the heart of the Castilian plateau at an altitude of around 800 meters, where a continental climate and calcareous clay soils give the Tempranillo its characteristic structure.
In the cellar, Alión uses French oak barrels instead of the traditional American barriques – a deliberate break with regional convention. The wines mature longer than legally required, giving them a velvety texture and a complex aroma profile of dark berries, cedar, and fine tobacco. Despite their power, they remain precise and display a long, mineral finish.
Alión wines pair perfectly with braised lamb, wild boar, or aged Manchego cheese – and continue to develop in the cellar for many years. Those seeking Ribera del Duero beyond the obvious will find here a producer with a distinct style.
