Cantina Terlan Lagrein DOC

Lagrein is South Tyrol's own red wine grape variety — and the Cantina Terlan is one of the cooperatives that demonstrates what can be achieved with it. This wine is not a heavyweight boxer, but an approachable, sensorially interesting everyday companion.

Founded in 1893, Cantina Terlan is now one of South Tyrol's most prestigious wine cooperatives. Around the town of Terlan, north of Bolzano, the vines benefit from an alpine climate, plenty of sunshine, and cool nights—ideal conditions for structure and aromatic depth.

The Lagrein ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, undergoes malolactic fermentation, and then matures for almost twelve months in large wooden barrels. The result: a deep, dense ruby red in the glass. The nose reveals cedarwood, Assam tea, and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, dark berries and violets follow, supported by velvety tannins and a lingering, pleasant finish.

Serving suggestion: Best served at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with South Tyrolean speck, grilled lamb chops, or a hearty pasta ragù. It's also delicious on its own after work.

Cantina Terlan

Since 1893, the Terlan winery in South Tyrol's Adige Valley has stood for something that has become rare in modern winemaking: patience. What was once founded by 24 winegrowers as a cooperative to emancipate themselves from large landowners is today one of the most prestigious addresses in Alpine winemaking. Cellar master Rudi Kofler, who has shaped the winery since 2002, continues a philosophy established by his predecessor Sebastian Stocker in the 1970s: extended lees aging, consistent focus on quality over quantity, and a legendary wine archive of around 100,000 bottles dating back to 1955. Terlan proves that white wines from volcanic porphyry soil and an Alpine microclimate can be among the longest-lived in the world.
