Cantina Terlan Kreuth Chardonnay

The Kreuth Chardonnay from Cantina Terlan shows what South Tyrol can do with this grape variety: not an international uniform style, but a white wine with a clear alpine character and real substance.

Cantina Terlan is one of Italy's most prestigious wine cooperatives. The vineyards around Terlan lie on porphyry and granite soils between 250 and 900 meters above sea level—a combination that imparts mineral tension and pronounced acidity. Kreuth is the entry-level Chardonnay from the estate, vinified using malolactic fermentation and aged on the lees for twelve months in large oak barrels.

On the nose, ripe apricot, a hint of banana and brioche, along with subtle vanilla notes from barrel aging. On the palate, it is round and pleasantly soft, without losing its freshness – the vibrant acidity keeps the fruit in balance and ensures a lingering finish.

Recommendation: Best served at 10–12 °C. Pairs well with grilled salmon, chicken in cream sauce, or mild mountain cheese. Drink now.

Cantina Terlan

Since 1893, the Terlan winery in South Tyrol's Adige Valley has stood for something that has become rare in modern winemaking: patience. What was once founded by 24 winegrowers as a cooperative to emancipate themselves from large landowners is today one of the most prestigious addresses in Alpine winemaking. Cellar master Rudi Kofler, who has shaped the winery since 2002, continues a philosophy established by his predecessor Sebastian Stocker in the 1970s: extended lees aging, consistent focus on quality over quantity, and a legendary wine archive of around 100,000 bottles dating back to 1955. Terlan proves that white wines from volcanic porphyry soil and an Alpine microclimate can be among the longest-lived in the world.
