Matthias Gaul Gris de Gris Asselheim

Pinot Gris from Asselheim – that's pure Palatinate: powerful, spicy, with a depth often denied to this grape variety. Matthias Gaul demonstrates here what's possible when location and craftsmanship are perfectly aligned.

The Gaul winery operates in Asselheim , a wine village in the northern part of the Palatinate, where loamy soils give the wines structure and a smooth texture. The name Gris de Gris alludes to the characteristic color of the Pinot Gris grape – a reference to the varietal, typical character of this wine.

In the glass, this Pinot Gris reveals itself with a clear profile: citrus notes – zest, bright lemongrass – mingle with ripe pear and baked apple . These are complemented by subtle spicy accents and a hint of nut, which lends the wine complexity. The body is full-bodied without being heavy, the acidity remains fresh and carries the wine through to its long finish.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
