Argiolas Is Solinas Riserva Carignano del Sulcis DOC

Carignano del Sulcis in its most concentrated form: old vines on sandy coastal soils in southwestern Sardinia, 12 months of barrique aging, plus the Mediterranean climate of the Sulcis — the Is Solinas Riserva from Argiolas shows what this underestimated grape variety can achieve.

Argiolas from Serdiana is considered the leading winery in Sardinia. Starting in the 1980s, the family, together with oenologist Giacomo Tachis — known for Sassicaia and Tignanello — redefined the potential of Sardinian grape varieties. The Is Solinas comes from old Carignano vines in the Sulcis, one of the few areas in the world where the variety stands on ungrafted rootstocks in deep sand, untouched by phylloxera.

A dense ruby red appears in the glass. On the nose, blackberry, myrtle, and rosemary, plus clove and a hint of leather from the barrique aging. On the palate, medium to full body, soft, well-integrated tannins, and a warm, spicy structure. The finish is long, slightly balsamic.

Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Pairs with lamb shank with maquis herbs, wild boar ragout, or aged Pecorino Sardo.

Argiolas

Argiolas – the cradle of the Sardinian wine renaissance. Founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas in Serdiana, the 230-hectare estate is now run by the third generation, his grandchildren. Antonio was ahead of his time: larger vineyard areas, a focus on quality. With legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis as a consultant, his sons invested in modernization. Only indigenous grape varieties are cultivated – many almost forgotten. Vermentino, Cannonau, Monica, Carignano – the Mediterranean climate provides them with ideal growing conditions. The highlight: Turriga, regularly awarded three glasses in the Gambero Rosso guide. Sardinian, elegant, international. Over two million bottles produced annually – Sardinian wine culture for the world.
