Matthias Gaul Pas de Deux knows

Pas de Deux white from Matthias Gaul is not a blended wine in the classic sense – it is a carefully choreographed interplay of two distinctive grape varieties. Those who appreciate white wines that tell more than a single story will find here a glass full of depth and elegance.

Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay form the duo: the Pinot Blanc contributes spicy substance and a creamy texture, while the Chardonnay adds vibrant fruit and a cool, almost mineral freshness. Matthias Gaul deliberately vinifies both varieties separately and only blends them together – thus preserving the best of both worlds without one variety overpowering the other. The result is complex yet never tiring: a wine with a long finish and genuine drinkability.

It is most beautiful at 10–12 °C – then it slowly opens up in the glass and unfolds its full structure. Especially recommended with:

  • Poultry in a light butter or cream sauce
  • mature Comté or mountain cheese
  • Pasta with truffles or mushrooms
  • Fish dishes with a touch of melt

A wine for evenings when you don't just want to drink wine – but drink and think at the same time.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
