Matthias Gaul Le Clos

Matthias Gaul Le Clos is no ordinary Rheinhessen red wine. It's the result of a precise focus on a single, particularly valuable parcel of land – and a winemaker who knows exactly what he wants to bring out in it. If you're looking for a red wine that combines depth, elegance, and origin in one glass, you've come to the right place.

In the glass, Le Clos shines a deep ruby red with violet reflections. The nose is complex: dark berry fruit – blackberry, black cherry, blueberry – mingles with delicate floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle spiciness of tobacco, pepper, and graphite. With a little aeration, layers of chocolate, leather, and delicate smoke unfold. On the palate, it is convincingly balanced: ripe, supple tannins, vibrant acidity, a velvety texture, and a long, precise finish.

Aging in used barriques gives the wine structure without overpowering the varietal fruit – a fine craft that is immediately apparent in the glass.

  • Goes perfectly with braised lamb, game dishes or aged hard cheese.
  • Ideal as a cellar wine : several years of potential, tertiary notes develop over time.
  • A compelling gift for wine lovers with a sense of terroir and precision.

Matthias Gaul

Matthias Gaul runs his winery in Grünstadt-Asselheim as the fourth generation of a winemaking family that laid the foundation in 1956 with their first bottled wine. At the northernmost tip of the German Wine Route, where winds from the Eis Valley create a cool microclimate, he cultivates 35 hectares primarily of Burgundy varieties – some in close plantings at an altitude of 300 meters, on pure limestone bedrock. VINUM magazine named him "King of Pinot" in 2017, and he has won the German Red Wine Award twice. Anyone who drinks his Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir will understand why these are not empty accolades.
