Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso DOC

Bright ruby red in the glass, aromas reminiscent of the volcanic soil of Mount Etna — the Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso from Donnafugata shows why Sicily's sleeping giant is one of Italy's most exciting wine regions.

Donnafugata has been a fixture in Sicily for decades and recognized Mount Etna as a distinct terroir zone early on. The vines grow on volcanic rock in mineral-rich soils of basalt lava and ash—a fact reflected in the wine. The main grape variety is Nerello Mascalese , the typical red of Etna: thin skin, light color, and rich structure.

The nose reveals aromas of strawberry and red currant , complemented by violet and a subtle spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg. Aging in barrique barrels adds a gentle oak spice without overpowering the fruit-forward flavors. On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with moderate tannins and a good length on the finish. The Berlin Wine Trophy awarded the 2017 vintage a gold medal, and James Suckling gave the 2016 vintage 92 points.

Serving temperature: 16–17 °C. Pairs well with grilled lamb chops , venison ragù on pappardelle, or a mature Pecorino Siciliano. Drinkable now, but will keep for several years.

Donnafugata

Donnafugata – “woman on the run.” The name references the novel “Il Gattopardo” and the story of a queen who found refuge precisely where the vineyards now lie. This is the inspiration for the logo. Giacomo Rallo founded the winery in 1983 with his wife Gabriella. He came from a family with over 160 years of experience in quality winemaking and revolutionized the style of Sicilian wines. Until his death in 2016, he led the winery with vision. Today, José and Antonio Rallo, the fifth generation, manage a team of professionals who share excellence and the Italian way of life with the world – always seeking new challenges.
