Donnafugata Contrada Marchesa Etna Rosso DOC

Nerello Mascalese from the northern slope of Mount Etna — cool, mineral, with a depth that surprises. The Contrada Marchesa shows why Sicily's volcanic wines have long since ceased to be considered an insider tip.

Donnafugata, one of the most renowned wine families in Sicily, cultivates individual plots on Mount Etna with the Contrada wines — each with its own character. The Marchesa plot is located on the northern slope, where the long, cool growing periods ensure extraordinary finesse. 14 months of barrique aging give the wine structure without drowning out the volcanic origin.

In the glass: garnet red with a light rim, typical for Nerello Mascalese. The nose shows red cherries, dried raspberries, and blood orange, underlaid by lava minerality and a hint of smoke. On the palate, silky, with fine tannins and lively acidity — the finish long, salty, with notes of herbs and tobacco. Awarded the gold medal at the Berliner Wein Trophy (2017 vintage) and 92 points from James Suckling (2016 vintage).

Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Pairs with braised lamb with olives, grilled tuna, or ripe Pecorino Siciliano.

Donnafugata Logo: stilisierte Frau mit wehendem Haar, Symbol des sizilianischen Weinguts Donnafugata

Donnafugata

Donnafugata – “woman on the run.” The name references the novel “Il Gattopardo” and the story of a queen who found refuge precisely where the vineyards now lie. This is the inspiration for the logo. Giacomo Rallo founded the winery in 1983 with his wife Gabriella. He came from a family with over 160 years of experience in quality winemaking and revolutionized the style of Sicilian wines. Until his death in 2016, he led the winery with vision. Today, José and Antonio Rallo, the fifth generation, manage a team of professionals who share excellence and the Italian way of life with the world – always seeking new challenges.
